Fox Valley Flying Club

NOVEMBER, 2008 Newsletter

Thoughts from the Editor

Sadly, it's the end of the season for most of us.  Yup; those of us with fully open-cockpit aircraft who shy away from hypothermia, and those of us who have a hard time getting their hangar doors open against the snow, now turn their attention to winter sports -- such as football and beer.  But, as the bitter end of the flying season approaches, some of us have tried to cram in as much airtime as possible.  For example, over the past month I had a number of fabulous, impromptu low-and-slow flights with Barry, Vance and even Kevin (who is FINALLY back in the air)!

Some of us decided to push the envelope a bit further.  Globe-trotter Mick, in his slick RV-9A, took a recent trip to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and sent me a fabulous write-up, complete with pictures.  Thanks, Mick!  In mid-September I flew the former Mickmobile, my RANS S-12, on the longest jaunt that I have taken it on thus far, almost 600 miles to Detroit and back.  I've put together an article on that trip for your enjoyment.  And, taking pity on me after reading my rant in the last Newsletter about no one sending me stuff to publish, Ken Grahm sent me THREE of his fabulous think-pieces.  I've put two of them in this Newsletter and am keeping one in reserve for a later time.

As always, if you do some flying, or learn about something worth offering up for the "common good" of our Club, consider sending me an email about it (to gilomen@ais.net), maybe with some pictures.  I'll gladly take any and all original stories (cribbing and reprints are discouraged) about flying that you have done, flying that you wanted to do and flying that made you wish you had stayed on the ground, as well as any amusing anecdotes, grumpy gripes, scary stories and wanted/for sale/for trade ads.  Let's get to it, people!
